Hi! Welcome to our kids cloud land website, we do toy reviews, science experiments, education topics for cbse, science and space facts, drawing and coloring, watercolor painting and more for kids!!!

Can water walk upwards against gravity? No, not really, but what makes water seem like it defies gravity is what we’re going to explore in this easy science experiment. You will also learn about primary colors and secondary colors. You will mix them and get another color!

Using us a few common kitchen items, kids can see the process of capillary action and learn about how attraction and adhesive forces cause the water to move from one glass to another. Detailed instructions, a simple scientific explanation, and a demonstration video are included below.

Supplies Needed for the Walking Water Science Experiment

  1. 6 glasses of equal height

  2. Water

  3. Paper Towel

  4. Food colors- red, blue and yellow

Walking Water Science Experiment Instruction

  1. Arrange three glasses filled with water.

2. We will add some food colors. First we will add red food color, second we will add yellow food color and last we will add blue food color.

3. Then, place three empty glasses in between.

4. Now, take a tissue paper and fold it until it gets thin. It should be like this.

5. Now, place the tissue papers inside the glasses.

6. Wait for 20 minutes and see the magic! You can see that if red and yellow mixes we get orange. Similarly, if we mix yellow and blue we get green! So, red blue and yellow are primary colors! And rest of them are secondary colors!!!

Tip: The longer you wait to check on the glasses will result in more of the water moving over to the other glass. The water will stop moving over until the cups are both filled with the same amount of water.

How Does the Walking Water Science Experiment Work

The water appears to defy gravity, but in reality, it moves because of a process called capillary action. Water is able to move against the force of gravity because water molecules stick to each other AND they stick to the fibers of the paper towel. As water molecules are attracted to the fibers of the paper towel, they pull other water molecules with them. The adhesive forces between the water and the fibers of the paper towel are stronger than the cohesive forces between the water molecules. As a result, the water travels up and across the paper towel out of one glass and into another.

Capillary action is the combined force of attraction among water molecules and with the molecules of surrounding materials. For example, root absorb the water from the soil and give it to the trees. This action also happens in our body. It is circulation of our blood.
